Most Kenyan doctors working in the government hospitals are an unhappy lot.
That’s because nothing seems to work in the counties ever since devolution arrived.
There has been a push by the doctors to have health reverted back to the national government – and many Kenyans agree.
This morning, medical interns took to the streets to demand their payment.
The interns who have been working in hospitals had been promised a pay – only for the government to renege of their promise.
The interns on Monday morning went to the doorsteps of Afya House holding placards to demand their monies.
The Ministry of Health failed to keep the promise to have the interns paid all their arrears by May 22.
Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union officials on May 9 held a meeting with Health CS Susan Wafula to address the matter.
The CS committed to ensure all the 895 interns posted in January are paid their salary arrears. She also promised to post 360 remaining in the next two weeks.
“These dates are committed and these dates mean an important thing for all healthcare workers,” KMPDU secretary general Davji Atellah said.
“Failure to meet these demands and other issues that have been raised by the union will culminate into a nationwide strike,” he added.
The doctors who had threatened to go on strike had shelved their plan as they held meeting with the government to have their needs met.
However, according to the doctors, the government has not been forthcoming with its promises.
