TTC Applicants to Get HELB Loans, as Teachers’ Recruitment Changes

BY PETER KARANJA

The Ministry of Education has announced new changes that will affect future recruitment of students willing to join the Teacher Training Colleges.

The announcement came at a time when teachers have been expressing their disappointment at the manner in which their affairs have been handled by their employer; the Teachers Service Commission, Kenya National Union of Teachers and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education.

In the fresh changes announced on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, by the Principal Secretary for Early Learning and Basic Education, Julius Jwan, students looking to join TTCs in the future will be recruited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

“Teacher Training colleges will be part and parcel of the GPE programme,” Jwan stated.

According to the Ministry, the new recruitment module will enable applicants to benefit from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

Students wishing to study Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) or Diploma in Early Childhood Development Teacher Education (DECTE) can now make applications to HELB and receive the much needed financial assistance.
