A group of boda boda riders in Embu County torched a school bus after it allegedly hit and killed a rider.
The incident which occurred on Monday, August 23, left residents in shock – with many wondering what may have happened had the bus been currying students.
According to Embu West Deputy County Commissioner Caroline Imaya, the residents took the law into their own hands after the bus rammed a rider – killing him and destroying his bike.
The bus which belonged to Lions school, was turned into ashes right outside Kenya Medical College Embu campus.
“The Lions School bus was just from picking students in the morning when the accident occurred.
“There were nine students in the bus at the time of the accident, but they were evacuated by the assistant chief who rushed to the scene,” Imaya stated.
The bus driver escaped death by a whisker after he was rescued by traffic officers who rushed to the scene.
The rider was rushed to Embu Level 5 hospital having sustained serious injuries from the accident – but was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Embu West DCC condemned the residents’ actions, noting that there is a right procedure to be followed when such accidents occur.
“It is important for people to follow the law whether they are boda boda riders or members of the public.
“An accident can happen to anyone at any given time. What’s important is that the law must take its course,” she said.
