A somber mood engulfed the New-life Seventh Day Adventist Church, 5th Ngong Avenue, Nairobi, on Tuesday, January 10 as friends, family and the University of Nairobi fraternity congregated at the church for a memorial service for the three departed students.
The three students – Hezbon Zavon 23, Mordecai Amayo Amollo 26, and John Mayagi Meraba 23, were part of the student mission from the University of Nairobi that had gone for a church mission in Port Victoria, Budalangi – under the umbrella of University of Nairobi Seventh Day Adventist Group (UoNSDA).
The three students drowned while four others were rescued after their boat capsized in Lake Victoria on Saturday, December 31.
The incident was confirmed by the Port Victoria police commander Mr. Isaaya Mosse.
According to the police, the group had decided to take a boat ride while on a brief break when the boat overturned, killing three students.
Officers from the Coast Guard had retrieved the bodies from the waters.
Reports from the police indicated that the tragic boat was being steered by steered by an 11-year-old boy.
Classmates of the departed students, SDA pastors, UONSDA patron, church elders, family representatives gave their tributes at the church in an event that left tears in the eyes.
The bodies will be buried starting Wednesday (Zavron), Thursday (Amayo) and Friday (Meraba) respectively.
