NTSA Proposes New Law for Private Car Owners

Over 4,000 Kenyans die on the roads every year.  This is a very big number, not to mention those who are left with life-threatening injuries.

Millions of dependants are left to suffer when the road takes a breadwinner.

It is for this reason that the National Transport and safety Authority (NTSA) wants private vehicles to be subjected to inspection.

“It is our desire to make sure the road carnage is minimized by regulating the road users. We cannot enact the new laws without your participation,” said NTSA board chairman Aden Ali.

NTSA is, however, proposing to outsource the inspection of private vehicles, which will be done once per year.

At the moment, NTSA is only inspecting PSV and Commercial vehicles only, yet the law requires all vehicles be inspected.

If passed, and it is highly likely that it will, all private vehicles considered not road worthy will be kicked out of the roads.

Also contained in the proposal is the push to suspend licenses of rogue drivers for a good six months.

Kenyans have been asked to give their views to the proposal.

Transport Licensing Appeal Board Secretary Andrew Kimani said it was time to get traffic police officers from the roads.
