Sex workers working from home in most Nairobi estates are denying married women living a geed night sleep.
It is not uncommon to find skimpily dressed women parading corridors and sections of major roads and estates in Nairobi in hunt for customers.
This has been brought about by the strict curfew hours and difficult economic times due to the effects of the Corona-virus pandemic.
Sex workers have relocated to the city estates in their thousands, and although some hotblooded men may love it, married women don’t like it one bit as they fear losing their husbands to night nurses.
Anne Kuria who resides in Nairobi’s Kayole estate says he recently caught her husband of 30 years chatting up a prostitute just next to their house.
“I found him talking to a notorious prostitute right behind our house. I grabbed him and pushed him back to the house. I suspect he was taking her number or something. I didn’t like it,” said Kuria who lives along Kayole’s Spine Road, a place flooded by sex workers.
Kuria told Mmwanahabari.co.ke that the women park right behind her house, next to her bedroom window.
“I live on the ground floor, which means I hear all manner of things at night. There are instances when they even have sex with customers right behind my window. It’s shameful because I have teenage boys and girls in the house,” she said.
Kuria says she would like to move to a different house, but things are not easy since she lost her job as a Supermarket attendant.
Pastor’s experience
The migration to the estates has been brought about by the fact that their is no nightlife in Nairobi given most men have to rush home from work from 5pm.
Nairobi’s Central Business District that had been their playing ground is now deserted with no customer prowling the streets at night.
Peter Wanyama who works as a carpenter and runs a church said that he had a terrible experience with one of the sex workers a few weeks ago.
“I was walking with my wife, and as I neared Nyama Villa area, I saw nearly 8 prostitutes lining the corridor. I had just bought roast maize and was eating as I engaged my wife in discussion. Suddenly, one of the women blocked my way and asked to share the maize. I was stunned, but still offered to share like any good Christian would. She held one one end of the maize as I held the other and made as if to break it into two – which we did,” sad Peter.
A generous man
Meanwhile, Peter’s wife stood nearby, following the happenings with keen interest, says Peter.
But what happened next is what shocked Peter who doubles up as an assistant bishop in one of the churches in Nairobi.
“She offered me sex, saying she would charge me Ksh250 since I was a generous man. I declined,” said Peter.
“She adopted this soft, sexy voice when she spoke to me. When I politely declined, she said she was willing to do it for free since I had shared my roasted maize with her,” said Peter. His wife was lost for words.
Most women in Eastlands area have expressed fear over growing number of sex workers moving into the estates.
Rose Adhiambo says that her neighbour is a sex worker in Embakasi, and has since March 2020, resorted to working from home.
“We don’t sleep at night. It’s just too much. As a woman, I fear for my husband. These women will take our men from us,” she said.
We help marriages – sex worker
Anita who is a 4th year student at the university has been a part-time sex worker for 3 years now.
She says unlike other sex workers, she is quite discreet and does not parade herself on the streets.
“I don’t steal married men from their wives, what we do is help their marriages. I don’t keep the men in my house, they just come and go back home to their wife happy,” she said.
Anita and three of her friends rented a high-end apartment in Eastlands where they invite and offer services to both married and single men.
“No one knows what happens in this house. Only one man can come here at a time, and applications and vetting is done online. It’s professional,” she said, but added that most married men were unhappy in their marriages and that’s why they seek their services.
Form 4 students
Some of the new entrants into the prostitution business especially in Eastlands are young girls who have just completed their secondary school education but come from poor families. Some just do it to raise money to support themselves and their families as Covid-19 continues to bite.
