Moi Forces Academy is located in Nairobi County – and shares a compound ‘within’ Kenyan military compound.
The school sits on 56 hectares of land donated by the Kenya Air Force, Moi Air Base
The idea behind the school started in late 1970s by the late President Daniel Arap Moi.
The Nursery School Children at the MOI Air Base made a request to Moi asking him to build for them a school in the military compound.
The children said they had to travel long distant to attend school. In 1979, Moi conducted the first fundraising and collected Sh7.8 million. It was a record collection.
That same day the foundation stone was laid. The Primary Division of the Academy opened with standard one pupils on 11th February 1980. This was followed by the admission of Form ones on 18th February 1980 and Form fives on 6th May 1980.
The school begun as a mixed boarding secondary school and day primary division.
In 1989, the Academy phased out the three streams of Form 5 and 6 with the full implementation of the 8.4.4 system of education.
In 1990, the secondary division became wholly boys with the transfer of girls to Moi Forces Academy – Lanet.
The secondary division has its dormitory blocks named after Military Barracks.
It was here that Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru pursued he A-levels and studying physics and chemistry. It was also here that the current CS for Defence Aden Duale went for his Kenya Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education (KACSE), which he completed in 1987.
