A number of motorists had to use the Nairobi Expressway to avoid passing through the Central Business District (CBD) during the day-long Azimio demonstrations.

The Expressway provided a safe passage for residents living along Mombasa Road and its environs.

Most companies located in Westlands allowed their employees to leave early, many of them advising their staff to use the Expressway.

“I used the Expressway, and only endured the dying smells of teargas. I exited the Expressway at Mlolongo,” said Nicholas who was using the Expressway for the first time.

According to Nicholas, their employer specifically asked the stuff to try and use the Expressway as it had not been affected by the demonstrations.

Most roads in Nairobi were blocked after Azimio supporters took to the streets on Monday 20.

Some of the most affected areas included Nairobi CBD, where most roads were barricaded.

Motorists using the 27 kilometres toll road connecting Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Nairobi’s Westlands area pay between Sh310 and Sh100 according to a Gazette Notice.

The price is based the distance covered.
