A one year old baby is reportedly fighting for his life at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret after he was attacked by what is suspected to be rats that mutilated part of his body.

The young child with his other three siblings are reported to have been abandoned by their mother after she was unable to provide food for them.

The woman is said to have locked her children in their mud-walled house in Sungura informal settlement area in the outskirts of Eldoret town and left to look for a manual job.

Residents of the village were perturbed by the painful cries of the children, and were forced to break into their house only to find the young boy having soiled himself and with some serious injuries to the thighs. Two of his fingers were missing reportedly having been devoured by rats.

Peter Barmasai, the Nyumba kumi area chairman together with other good Samaritans rushed the boy to the hospital for treatment.

“We were forced to break the door open after we heard distress calls from the children,” said the Barmasai.

“They claimed that their mother locked them inside the house saying she was going to look for food for them,” said Peter Barmasai.

He said that local residents joined hands by raising money to buy food for the starving children who looked malnourished.

“ We found the children in a very bad state. The child is currently in hospital undergoing treatment ,” said Barmasai.
