13 people are reported dead and many others injured after a tanker they were siphoning fuel from burst into flames on the night of July 17.
Reports indicated that the incident occurred at Malanga village along the busy Kisumu Busia Road.
The incident which left 11 people nursing serious burn injuries was conformed by he Gem sub-county police commander Moses Chacha who said that the tanker had overturned.
“The members of the public took advantage and went to siphon the petrol as one compartment of the tanker was open. Another resident realising the other compartment was closed and delaying them, opened it to enable them to siphon very fast before the police could arrive in the process it caused a spark and blew up,” said Gem OCPD Mosera Chacha.
According to Chacha, a lorry ferrying milk and the fuel tanker hit each other before the petrol tanker fell down on its side.
The tanker is still at the scene.
