Police in Nandi have launched a man-hunt for a rogue matatu driver who caused the death of an upcoming athlete, Sammy Kosgei.
The athlete, who hails from Kamonjil village in Nandi County, was reportedly crashed to death by a speeding Matatu on Friday evening along the busy Lessos-Kapsabet road.
Talking to Mwanahabari.co.ke on phone, County Police Commander Joseph Kavoo said the matatu driver went underground after causing the death of the rising star.
Emaki trading centre
The incident, according to the police, occurred at Emaki trading centre which has been termed a black spot by local residents who called on the concerned authority to erect speed bumps.
“The runner was knocked down by the speeding matatu as he was strolling along the busy road and died on the spot. We have launched a man-hut for the driver who is still at large,” said Kavoo.
He said that crime scene officers visited the scene of the tragic accident and transported the body of the deceased to Kapsabet county referral hospital morgue for preservation.
“We are yet to ascertain where the deceased was heading to when he was knocked down by the speeding matatu along the Lesson-Kapsabet highway on fateful Friday evening,” said Kavoo.
The police boss, however, assured the bereaved family that it was just a matter of time before they apprehend the driver.
Hosea Saina, a family spokesman, mourned his brother saying the accident had robbed them of a breadwinner who was destined for big things.
“It is sad that death has robbed us of a humble and down to earth runner who was destined for bigger races both locally and internationally.
“We will miss him dearly and may God rest his soul in eternal life,” said the elder brother.
