Kalonzo Features in Samido’s Video, Sends Powerful Message

By Joe Modie

Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has featured in Samido’s latest music video released on Friday, August 13.

In the video, which has already garnered over 100,000 views on Youtube in less than 24 hours, Musyoka appears in a scene where the character of Samido visits his prospective in-laws for bride price negotiations.

Musyoka is later captured dancing, when the two sides are celebrating successful bridal negotiations.

The song is titled Muthoniwa (in-law in Gikuyu). In the song, Samido narrates how he met a certain beautiful girl, while coming from a trip in Thika.

He hails down a matatu and inside this matatu is a beautiful girl who keeps stealing glances at Samido. One thing leads to another and the two fall in love with each other.

A girl from Kamba-land

What follows is Samido consulting his relatives to ask whether Samido – from the Gikuyu community – can get married to a girl from the Kamba community.

His uncles give him the go-ahead, assuring him that Kikuyu’s fondly refer members of the Kamba community as athoniwa (in-laws).

There is deep symbolism in the song, especially with the appearance of Kalonzo Musyoka in the video. One cannot miss the hidden political messaging.

The Wiper leader is gearing himself to make a second stab at the presidency, following his first run in 2007, where he came in third after Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga. He later got into a deal with Kibaki and was made vice president, while Odinga later became Prime Minister.

Spread Kalonzo’s message

Clearly, Musyoka is courting the populous Mt Kenya region, since it appears like they won’t be having a presidential candidate when Uhuru Kenyatta’s second term comes to an end, in 2022.

Presidential candidates are currently trying to endear themselves to voters in the Mt Kenya region, and what a better way for Musyoka to do this than to ‘remind’ the Kikuyu that he is their ‘in-law’.

He also hopes that Samido’s star appeal among fellow Kikuyus will help spread his message of how Kalonzo and by extension Kambas are ‘related’.

Samido has this week been embroiled in a controversy where his Baby Mama, Karen Nyamu accused him of assault. She also revealed that she his pregnant with Samido’s child.
