Night travel: Govt Issues New Directives to Matatus, bus Operators

The government has been meeting with Public Service Vehicles operators as it seeks to allow normal operations going forward.

Reports indicate that the government is set to allow night travel for public service vehicles like buses and matatus past the 10 p.m. curfew time.

According to the Inter-county Bus Owners Association chairman Abubakar Twalib,  the government will in the next two weeks allow matatu operators on the road beyond 10pm.

The revelations were made after a meeting between industry stakeholders and Transport Chief Administrative Secretary Chris Obure.

Reports in the Nation indicated that it was resolved that the vehicles would be allowed to carry full capacity beginning Monday, August 9, 2021.

“We were with various government health officials who gave directions o be followed. We shall adhere to them,” said Twalib.

“The government has done good to the transport sector and we promise to ensure all passengers adhere to the set regulations.

“We chose to start operating full capacity on Monday since we sought more time to share the guidelines with various transport sector stakeholders,” he added.

The moves means that bus fares are set to reduce following the directive.
