A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Emily Chepkemboi, a student of clinical medicine at Kenya Medical Training College student in Homa Bay.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday, July 6, after the rotting body of Emily was discovered in her house – withe the door locked from outside.
37-year-old man
Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said they were holding the 37-year-old, said to be Chepkemboi’s boyfriend, in connection with the murder of the student.
The arrest was made possible after the detectives analyzed the Chepkemboi’s mobile phone log data.
“We’re holding him in custody at the Homa Bay Police Station,” Homa Bay Sub-County Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) Monica Berege told Standard.
“We’ll interrogate him to establish if he had any role in the student’s killing,” said Berege.
Stabbed on the head
A postmortem conducted on Chepkemboi at the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital revealed she had died of suffocation.
Further examinations also revealed that the 23-year-old had been stabbed in the head and on the left arm.
Her body was found lying in a pool of blood on Sunday, June 4 at her house in Oriang’ Estate, within Homa Bay Town.
Her body was discovered by neigbours who after they heard strange smell coming from her house.

Since her door had been locked from outside, with a padlock, the neighbours were forced to look through the window – at which point they saw Chepkemboi’s lifeless body lying on the bed.
Police would later track down Chepkemboi’s boyfriend who is now in custody.
“She was pursuing education to help Kenyans. We (her family), and the immediate community members are now mourning a girl, whose future was promising,” said Chepkemboi’s brother Joseph Kipruto.
Chepkemboi hailed from Kimugulmet Village in Nandi Central Sub-County, Nandi County.
“I’m urging the Government to ensure my sister gets justice,” he told the Standard.
