Seven people who were working at a construction site in Nairobi’s Kilimani site died on Thursday afternoon, August 26, after a lifting machine they were using collapsed.
The building is reportedly located opposite Silver Springs Hotel – and was currently under active construction.
Search and rescue operation is still underway – with the police saying that the numbers could be higher.
According to witnesses, the giant crane crumbled before hitting the ground with a thud.
“The lifting machine disintegrated, throwing out site workers who were in it. The crane, thereafter, thudded against the ground, trapping several people,” said the witness.
Most workers fell from high points and hit the ground – before the crane fell on them.
Regional police boss Augustine Nthumbi said rescue operation are ongoing.
On his part, Kilimani DCIO Stephen Ole Tanki said: “As you know we’re still in the search and rescue process, and, therefore, it’s not easy to tell how many people have died or how many are injured in the incident.”
