Former Kakamega High Defender Okumu Makes History in Europe

Kenyan defender international Joseph Okumu is already making history abroad just months after joining Belgium side KAA Gent in July 2021.

It was Okumu’s goal that made a difference when his team KAA Gent played against Rigas FC 1-0 on Thursday, August 12. The goal means that KAA Gent will progress to the Europa Conference League play-off round.

Joseph Okumu announced himself to Kenya and the world in 2019 after participating in the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Although it was what many would consider baptism of fire for the young lad – especially because he was a last minute addition after dependable defender Joash Onyango suffered an injury – Okumu shocked many at the tournament.

Okumu who rose from Kakamega High School football team alongside Harambee Stars left-back Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma, was clam, collected and showed good leadership at the back even in his small frame.

Okumu joined the Belgian giants from Swedish side Elfsborg FC.

“It’s nice to score. We are also starting to get to know each other better now. Timing remains important and therefore also knowing where your teammates will place the ball,” Okumu told the club’s official website.

“I’m happy with the win. We knew we were going to have to put in 110% to continue today. We have made the best possible use of our qualities and that has paid off.”

“I want to play. We are professionals and must be able to adapt to the position that is assigned to us. We are still two games away [against the Polish Rakow Czestochowa from the group stage of the Conference League.

This would be my first time

“It will be important for the club and the team, but also for me. As a footballer, you always hope to get as far as possible. This would be my first time playing a European group stage.

“We will do everything we can to continue anyway!”

Veteran coach Twahir Muhiddin backed Okumu to thrive in his new team saying: “He is a good reader of the game, easily cuts the arrow passes of the opponents and is very good in one-on-one situations. It is amazing how he keeps the composure even in high intensity matches. Definitely, if he keeps learning with humility, he will shine at Gent and beyond. I only pray that he will stay fit to exploit his full potential.”
