New details have emerged surrounding the shocking murder of two innocent children by their father, an Obstetrician at a Nakuru hospital.
Reports indicated that the doctor, James Muriithi Gakara from Nakuru’s Optimum Current Hospital, may have lost his cool after he differed with his wife over her intention to travel abroad.
A neighbour privy to the incident told the media that the couple had been quarreling over the matter – after the man of the house objected to plans by his wife to travel abroad.
Admitted under tight security
Dr Gakara killed his two children aged three and five years early Sunday morning, September 19, before unsuccessfully attempting to commit suicide.
Reports from the police indicated that the dad injected the minors with insulin. Insulin, according to medical reports, causes hypoglycemia (reduction in blood glucose).
The result of a casual or intentional overdose of insulin leads to hypoglycemic coma and in extreme cases even death of the user.
The doctor is currently admitted at the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital under tight police security.
According to area police commander Beatrice Kiraguri, the doctor, from their preliminary investigations, may have injected the children with a drug which they are yet to identify.
“The scene indicates some drugs were used on the children and on himself. A postmortem shall be conducted to establish what type of drug it was,” Kiraguri said, noting that the bodies had been moved to the Nakuru County Mortuary.
The incident which took place at the doctor’s home in Kiamunyi Estate early Sunday morning shocked the neighbours, most of whom described daktari as a polite and seemingly level headed man.
The wife was not at home
It was the neighbours who called the police after noticing that Gakara had locked himself up in the house with the children – something was not normal.
Police arrived at the house and broke the door in an attempt to save the three, but it was already too late as they had already died. The father, the doctor, was still conscious, and was rushed to the hospital.
According to Kiraguri, the mother of the children was not at home at the time of the incident.
