Things are not looking rosy at the Moi family owned Standard Media Group after subsidized canteen services were suddenly suspended this week, leaving over 600 staff to find alternative means to feed themselves.
NAS Airport Services who have been running a catering facility at the company premises for over two decades have now closed shop.
The Human Resource office wrote an email to the staff informing them of the changes.
“Dear Colleagues,
We wish to inform you that Cafeteria services are temporarily suspended.
We are actively working to find a solution to ensure that your meal needs are met. In the meantime, we recommend that you make alternative arrangements for your meals. Apologies for the inconvenience caused.
Regards, HR Department
A shocker
The news has come as a shocker to employees who have for decades benefited from a subsidised meal plan, with the staff only required to pay Sh110 per meal while the company paid some Sh300.
“This is very bad news especially because the company has not been paying the staff their whole salaries for sometime now. I fear many people will have to work with an empty stomach,” one of the journalists at the establishment told Mwanahabari.
Standard Group in 2022 issued a communication to staff informing them of its intention to send home some journalists citing tough business and nosediving revenue.
Mwanahabari understands that hundreds of employees have been resigning from the company since last year after going for months without pay.
“I cannot work daily, and not get paid for my services. I would rather leave and go out there see if I can get something to do,” an editor who left in January told Mwanahabari.
