Former Manchester United coach Louis van Gaal has warned Ajax coach Erik ten Hag against joining Manchester United.
Van Gaal who left Man United after being fired over poor performance has no doubt thrown spanners into the works as his former employer looks to get a new manager.
There are rumours that Erik ten Hag aced a recent interview – and that he is a frontrunner in the race that has seen Manchester United Board interview many contenders.
In what can only be seen as a dig at his former employer, Van Gaal, a strict coach who hardly got along with players due to his tough, no nonsense nature referred to United as a “commercial club” – and that Erik ten Hag should avoid it.
He said: “Erik ten Hag is a great coach and that is always good for Manchester United,” Van Gaal said at a recent press conference.
“But Manchester United are a commercial club, so it’s a difficult choice for a coach.”
“He would be better going to a football club,” he said.
Noting: “I’m not going to advise him, he’ll call me himself. But he must choose a football club and not a commercial club.”
Manchester United are keen to replace the interim manager Ralf Rangnick this summer.
Van Gaal left United after winning the FA Cup in May 2016 – something that shocked many.
Other managers alleged to be on Manchester United’s shortlist include the current Paris St-Germain manager, Mauricio Pochettino, Spain head coach Luis Enrique and Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui.
