AFCON: Mendy Gets Best Goalie Trophy, But Thinks Egyptian Was Better

Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was fitted the Africa Cup of Nations’ goalkeeper of the tournament, but went on to name the keeper he fills deserved the trophy. 

The Chelsea star has claimed that Egypt’s Abou Gabal ‘Gabaski’ was the best goalkeeper at the tournament, and should have received the trophy instead.

“Gabaski is the best goalkeeper of the tournament, honestly,” said Mendy who has already won Champions League with Chelsea.

“I spoke to him and I told him he deserves to win goalkeeper of the tournament. And I was really impressed by his tournament.”

Mendy is no doubt in high spirits after helping  helped his country to win AFCON for the first time in their history – by thumping Egypt on penalties.

Mendy kept three clean sheets out of five and only conceded two goals in the entire tournament – while  Gabaski played four games for Egypt and let in one goal.

The Egyptian goalie saved eight penalties at the AFCON – and earned the man of the match award in the final.
