Matasi’s Request For Financial Help Speaks Volumes

Kenyans footballers live from hand to mouth with no hope for tomorrow. That tomorrow always comes  early – like an unwelcome guest.
It knocks on most footballers’ doors when they hit early 30s – when their services are no longer required.
That same tomorrow – one which most if not all footballers are prepared for – always comes. That day arrived for lanky defender zablon Amanaka, former football maestro Joe Kadenge, Martin Imbalambala who lost his site and could not even afford a trip to hospital.
One cannot count in on hand alone the number of footballers who have suffered during and even after their playing days. Local football coaches like Robert Matano had to seek help from kenyans to clear hospital bills a few years ago.
There there is the story of Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi.

The goalkeeper was travelling to Nairobi in order to catch a flight to Addis Ababa Ethiopia to link up with his club when the accident happened.

Matasi plays for St George SC Club otherwise known as Kidus Giorgis, a professional football club based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The goalkeeper has since asked members of the public to help him settle his ballooning hospital bill.

Matasi was released from the hospital a day after the accident, but his wife and son required additional medical attention.

“Hello friends, as I had already shared with you, my wife and son were scheduled for surgery, which they did. My wife was operated on on 7th June while my son underwent his surgery today,”

“As you all know, in these types of situations, bills spiral and sometimes become overwhelming, especially in this case where it’s three people that require medical attention.

“This is why I am requesting for you to support me as I run up and down to ensure all of us are finally healed and get back to our normal lives.

“I understand that times are hard, but whatever amount will be appreciated. Thank you and may God bless you.”

He is one of Kenya’s most established goalkeepers.

He was the number one goalkeeper when Kenya fought for a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations slot and was used prominently during the finals in Egypt.

Matasi made his debut for the national team in 2017 and has so far featured in 27 games for Harambee Stars, including the Cecafa finals when Kenya lifted the trophy under Paul Put.
