A video recording showing motorbike riders beating up Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police King’ori Mwangi in his car on Thursday, August 7, 2021 has broken the internet.
The video shows a mob of riders clad in reflectors and helmets attempting to pull out Officer King’ori who was clad in civilian clothing from the front of his car.
King’ori can be seen half dodging the lose blows and slaps fired a him by a rowdy mob who accused him of running over two pedestrians on Nairobi’s Lang’ata road before speeding away.
A female occupant who was sitting next to King’ori can be heard pleading for forgiveness as the boda boda riders continued to beat him up.
The mob also tried to smash the officer’s windscreen before traffic police officers came to their rescue.
King’ori has since said that he was rushing an expectant woman to Nairobi hospital when he hit the pedestrians.
“I had an emergency, I was rushing an expectant woman to hospital when the accident occurred before the rowdy boda boda riders pounced on us,” King’ori told the Standard.
“I was driving on my side when two pedestrians jumped onto the road. I tried my best in the situation,” he said.
“I was rushing to Lang’ata Police Station to report the matter because my vehicle has insurance.”
Speaking after the incident, police at Lang’ata Police Station said no formal complaint had been filed against King’ori.
