Uganda Police Shoot Kenyan Fisherman, Throw Body in Lake Victoria

A 28-year-old fisherman was reportedly shot dead by Ugandan security officials and his body dumped inside Lake Victoria.

The incident has left local residents infuriated – and asking the Kenyan government to take action against the Ugandan officers.

Sources told Mwanahabari.co.ke that Arafat Okinyi Nguka aka Major was shot and killed by Ugandan police based at the Lolwe Island in Uganda.

Nguka was in the company of three other fishermen from Sindo Beach, Suba Sub County, when the incident occurred on Thursday at 7.30am several kilometres from the Kenyan shores.

The fishermen were fishing near Ringiti Island, which is more than 40km from Mbita.

Nguka was shot as they were returning to Sindo Beach after fishing the whole night – when they ran into the officers who were in a speedboat.

The Ugandan officers had arrested other Kenyan fishermen who were in their custody just 10 kilometres from Ringiti Island.

Nguka who was the coxswain powered the boat – and sped away after he was ordered to stop by the Ugandan officers.

It was then that one of the Ugandan security officers fired at their boat, shooting Nguka in the head.

Witnesses said that there was scuffle as the Ugandan officers tried to throw Nguka’s body into the waters – which they eventually did.

A bullet cartridge was recovered in the boat.

Sindo fishermen leadership have asked the Kenya Coastguard Service to help them retrieve the body.
