After Peres Jepchirchir and Brigid Kosgei won gold and silverĀ respectively in the women’s marathon in Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, August 7, Kenyans are eying two more gold medals on Saturday.
Kenyans will be keen to see how their compatriots compete in the 10,000 metres (women), and 1,500 metres (men) events – before the men’s marathon crowns it all up on Sunday, around 1am Kenyan time.
Representing Kenya in the 10,000 metres women race will be firebrand Hellen Obiri, Cheptai Irine and Chelangat Sheila.
Represnting Kenya in the 1500o meters race will be Cheruiyot Timothy and Kipsang Abel both of whom are expected to carry the national flag in Japan.
The other big event that every Kenyan will be waiting for with abated breath is the men’s marathon. World champion Eliud Kipchoge, his compatriots Cherono Lawrence and Kipruto Amos will be the foot-soldiers in this an event that will attract major opposition from Ethiopians.
Should Kenya win the gold in the men’s marathon, then it’s national anthem will be the last to be played in the event as it comes to an end – just as was the case in 2016 when Kipchoge won gold in Rio Olympics marathon.
There is not doubt that this will not be a cake walk.
