A father was left scratching his head after he lost a whooping Ksh200,000 on a bet.
The money belonged to his son – and was to be used to organize his wedding engagement party.
The son then went on to sell his father’s house for Ksh500,000 to recoup his lost money – to allow him to proceed with the wedding arrangement.
The incident which occurred in Garsen, Tana River County, left the residents in disbelief.
Reports indicated that the son, Francis Makasi, 35, had given his father Ksh200,000 for the sole purpose of organizing the introduction ceremony and engagement party – but the old man had other ideas.
He felt he could gamble with the money, make some good profit and return the principle amount to his son.
Things didn’t go according to plan as his team – Brazil – drew with Mexico in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics games.
The old man was seen in local bars entertaining friends and engaging in betting activities on Olympics soccer games.
“He has always been a Brazil fan. One of his friends tells me he lost Sh50,000 in each of the games he was expecting to win. The last loss was a draw between Brazil and Mexico,” said Makasi’s uncle Joseph Masih.
But on Wednesday last week, Mr Makasi came back home to prepare for the ceremony, only to be told his father had moved back to his rural home.
The son was shocked when he returned home to finalise preparations only to learn that his father had lost all the money in a bet.
Makasi confronted his father in the morning, and demanded to know where he had taken the money.
“He told him that he felt Ksh200,000 was not enough for the party and so he thought he should gamble it to make more money but lost in the process,” said the uncle.
It was then that an angry Makasi began seeking buyers for his father’s house – which he ended up selling for Ksh500,000 and immediately left for the Nairobi, his uncle said.
The engagement party is set for August 7, 2021.
