Number of Kenyans Earning Over Ksh100,000 Revealed

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 revealed the real number of Kenyans who earn over Ksh100,000 as salary at the end of every month.

The data showed that only 79,909 Kenyans earn a salary of more than Ksh100,000 per month.

KEBS has also noted that the number reduced significantly compared to lat year – possibly due to the vagaries of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The top earners dropped by 4,861 compared – which is a very huge fall.

According to KEBS,  2.9 percent of the 2.7 million formal workers whose data are in the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) database earn over Ksh100,000.

The small number of Kenyans who earn this kind of money means that only a handful of Kenyans get to feel the real pinch – of the PAYE – and which accounts for significant government income.

The drop has also been blamed on the economic hardships most companies are facing in Kenya, which has led to massive job losses and closure of firms owing to Covid-19.
