Landlords in Nairobi risk a Ksh1,500 daily fine should they fail to paint their buildings as required by the Public Health Cap 242 and County by-laws.
Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director Mohamed Badi had granted a one year extension to property owners in Nairobi – and which has now expired.
The extension was prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic which affected most businesses in the capital.
Property owners were also given a two-month notice to repaint their buildings as part of an ongoing beautification project in the capital.
According to the Public Health Cap 242 and County by-laws, property owners in the city are required to repaint their buildings after every two years.
“Any person who is guilty of an offence under, or convention of, or default in complying with, any provision of these Rules shall be liable to a fine not exceeding Sh1,500 for every day during which the contravention continues,” states the Act.
This comes just months after NMS ordered repainting of all building in Nairobi within 60 days. The owners were asked to use colours originally approved for the building plans.
This is not the first time that building owners in the capital, with arrests made in August, 2019 by the county government for the owners who failed to comply.
