Moi Avenue Shooting – Actor Was Among First Rescuers at DusitD2

A picture has emerged showing a heavily armed Ainea Ojiambo at the DusitD2 compound just minutes after terrorists took over the hotel in January 2019. 

The photo taken at DusitD2 shows Ojiambo clad in a heavy jacket – and hugging a machine gun as he worked with other law enforcers to free stranded Kenyans and contain the situation.

“He was among the first few licensed private gun holders to respond to the 2019 DusitD2 terror attack that rocked the country on January 15, 2019,” a photojournalist who was at the scene told this writer and even shared the picture with Mwanahabari.co.ke.

The terror attack left more than 20 people dead – after hundreds were safely evacuated from the premises.

The DusitD2 picture emerged that days after Ojiambo was captured on video being attacked by three armed thugs along Nairobi’s Moi Avenue street before shots were fired which left two people; a guard and bystander injured.

The actor who was held after the Moi Avenue shooting has since been released from police custody as investigations continue into the incident continues.

According to police, Moi Avenue is one of the most dangerous streets in Nairobi.

Police said they are investigating the incident which left a guard and another bystander sustain serious gun hot wounds; one of them to the eye, and the other to the leg. The two were rushed to the hospital.

The investigations have had a new twist after police allegedly retrieved a strange cartridge from the scene of the shooting that occurred on Friday, April 30, at about 4.30pm.

“The police found a strange cartridge at the scene and will be looking into it,” a source who did not wish to be named told Mwanahabari.co.ke – adding that “one of the thugs may have sustained a gunshot wound as there was a trail of blood.”

The criminals scampered for safety are yet to be apprehended.

CCTV footage that captured the incident showed Ojiambo with a woman on the sidewalk before three men approached him and tried to grab his gold chain.

Ojiambo can be seen reaching for his gun – in a flush – as he tried to defend himself from the attackers – prompting the criminals to scamper for safety.

The video later showed Ojiambo reaching for his chain and his face mask that fell on the ground during the melee.

Ojiambo, who is a columnist with The Nairobian (a publication owned by Standard Group) and has acted in a series of films including the ‘Makutano Junction’ TV series and Jela 5, The Constant Gardener, Bullion and Jack Zollo: My Life in Crime, is a licensed gun holder and has undergone extensive training in gun handling.

From his CV, seen by Mwanahabari.co.ke, Ojiambo is a member of International Police Organization (KEN071), International Bodyguard Association, Gun Owners Association of Kenya, Kenya Rifle Regiment Club.

He has undergone training in close protection with experience in security management, motorcade operations, threat and risk analysis. He has also trained as a Private Military Contractor and done a course in counter terrorism at European Security Academy also trained with elite Kenya forces. He is also an active competition shooter with a diploma in Basic covert surveillance skills.

He has a certificate in Individual Battle Handling Tactics (IBHT) covering: Tactical Pistol, Tactical Rifle, Care Under Fire, Alertness levels, Counter observation, Close Quarter Battle, basic paramedics and Combat Awareness with RECCE Coy.

Ojiambo also has a Diploma in International Bodyguard Association (Badge No. 6095) Duration 100 hours covering. Diploma in Basic Covert Surveillance Skills; according to the methodology of the British Security Services (M15-A4). Certificate in Private Military Contractor Training Course at the European Security Academy, which prepares the security personnel for protective operations in a hostile environment. (Poznan Poland). Meanwhile, his pistol was taken away for forensic analysis by the police.
