A woman and her boyfriend were arrested after engaging the police on a wild goose chase in fake kidnapping incident.
The woman whom police have identified as Jane Wairimu Ndung’u, reportedly disappeared on Friday, September 17, 2021 – and would later call her husband Brian Mutuku, informing him that she had been kidnapped by unknown people.
According to Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers, Mutuku received a call from his wife claiming to have been kidnapped by people who were demanding Ksh200,000 ransom.
A worried Mutuku rushed to the DCI offices in Embakasi to report the matter – and seek help.
Husband sent Ksh17,000
A search by the detectives on the location of the phone revealed that Wairimu was in the city centre, somewhere along Loita street.
Mutuku mobilized resources, working with friends and relatives to raise Ksh17,000, which they sent to the alleged kidnappers.
Unknown to Mutuku and the police, Wairimu and her alleged abductor were two lovers were having a sweet time, DCI alleges.
An additional Ksh40,000 was collected by relatives who came together to form a WhatsApp group for this purpose.
The two lovers are said to have travelled from Malaa to Mtito-aNdei where they withdrew the money.
University girlfriend
“Mogire changed the vehicle he was earlier using to avoid detection, picked his lovestruck main girlfriend from the Juja based university and went with her to the one roomed house where he had stayed with Wairimu since her faked disappearance.”
The three were arrested in Sagana by detectives – and are currently in custody.
Meanwhile, the DCI has warned Kenyans against faking abductions.
