Magoha Announces Reduced School Fees

Parents and guardians will now pay reduced school fees after the Ministry of Education intervened following cries by parents over excessive fee payments.

The Ministry of education has reduced secondary fees to be paid as schools begin a new calendar year on July 26, 2021.

The coming calendar year will have 30 weeks and not 39 weeks – something that has prompted the reduction in school fees.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Jwan said students in Category A – which contains all national schools and extra-county schools located in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Nyeri, Thika and Eldoret – will now pay a maximum of KSh 45,000.

Parents and guardians will enjoy a KSh 8,554 relief having paid KSh 53,554 in the academic year ending in July 2021.

Category B – which contains boarding schools and extra county schools located in other areas other than towns listed in Category A – will now pay KSh 35,000.  This means that parents will enjoy a KSh 5,545 relief.

On the other hand, students in Day Schools will only get to cater for school uniform and meals as the government covers all the tuition fee. Meanwhile, parents with children in special needs schools will now pay Ksh10,860 yearly.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha recently noted that some parents had refused to pay fees. He directed school heads to send home fees defaulters noting that there were over 10 million fees defaulters across the country.
