A woman who works with the leading mobile money lending company Tala was allegedly conned Ksh9 million by a man he met on an online dating site.
The said manager (whose name has not been revealed) is alleged to have been conned by a Ghanaian national who police identified as Victor Anane.
Anane is said to have fraudulently obtained the millions of shillings from the woman after showering her with love online – and promising to help her land a lucrative promotion at work.
Police said that the two men on an online dating site, and had been dating for a while.
According to a police report obtained by Citizen, the Ghanaian introduced himself to the lady as a miracle-working preacher who could help her get promoted at work, and grow her career to unprecedented levels.
“The two dated for a while and as their love blossomed, the lady was invited to the man’s residence at Transview estate in Athi River,” the police report explains.
“What was meant to be a romantic date turned ugly, as the woman demanded to know how the man of the cloth she had fallen in love with, possessed paraphernalia associated with dark powers,” the report explains.
Adding: “He promised to help turn her fortunes around, if she fell in love with him. Some of the money she is believed to have given him had been obtained from accounts belonging to Tala agencies,” the detectives noted.
Police said that they raided the suspect’s house in Athi River where they discovered witchcraft paraphenalia and Ksh.76,000 in fake currency.
