Chavakali Boys High School Closed

Learning has been disrupted at Chavakali Boys High School in Vihiga County after the school closed it gates on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 after students went on strike.

The school which is located in Western was closed after students went went on strike – and destroyed property which included the school bus and classes.

The school principal Mr John Kuira said: “They have smashed all the windows. This incident follows a fire outbreak at the dormitory on Sunday.”

Reports indicate that the school leadership took time to speak to over 2000 students to calm them down – and counsel them – earlier on Tuesday – in attempt to avert the strike.

The school administration expressed their shock at the fact that the students still went ahead to riot later that night – even after having objective discussions with teachers and counsellors.

The riot comes at a time when many schools in Kenya have witnessed student unrest and school fires – which has left a trail of destruction.

Meanwhile, the government and the Ministry of Education on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, said that it will allow students to go for half term break from November 19 to November 23.

Some of the schools that have gone on strike include Kericho High School,Tenges Boys High School in Baringo, St Lukes Boys High School, Mukaa Boys High School,Kirimara Boys High school in Nyeri county and Buruburu Girls in Nairobi.

Others are Nyabigena secondary school in Kisii, and Kahuhia Girls High School in Muranga County.

There are claims that the students are fatigued having spent acres of hours in school since the resumption of learning after the Covid-19 pandemic led to closure of school for 9 months.

Reports indicate that teachers have been burning the midnight oil – pushing students – as they race to complete the learning backlog.
