President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party candidate Joseph Mung’ara Githinji has edged the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Peter Kamau Thumbi in the highly contested Muguga Ward by-election in Kiambu county.
Githinji emerged the winner with 4,089 votes (50%), followed closely by UDA’s Peter Kamau Thumbi who got 4,062 votes (49%).
Thirdway Alliance aspirant Moses Gichau was third with 49 votes.
Vote tallying suspended in Kiambaa
Meanwhile, vote-tallying was suspended on Friday morning, July 16 after chaos erupted at Karuri High School centre in Kiambaa by-election.
The suspension was announced by Returning Officer, Peter Muigai.
This was after Jubilee candidate Njama Kariuki demanded a recount of votes in three polling stations namely Mucatha, Kawaida and Gachie.
The tallying showed that United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, John Njuguna was leading in he 152 polling stations so far, out of the 154. Njuguna was leading with 21,301 votes against Kariri’s 21,057.
The returning officer said he had made some errors in tallying of votes from three polling stations.
