RAILA Odinga has accused government security agencies of trying to disrupt Bonchari and Juja by-elections held on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader released a statement where he accused Kenyan security agencies of demonstrating willful abuse of police power and impunity.
“What we have witnessed in the by-elections in Bonchari and Juja is an abuse of police powers and an arrogant display of IMPUNITY by a few overzealous and bellicose government functionaries,” Raila Tweeted.
Adding: “Security forces exist to serve the people and not the interests of those out to conduct political experiments.”
The happenings will no doubt test the political marriage between ODM leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The ODM leader maintained that elections are a chance for voters to express themselves, not for politicians to pursue ‘imaginary and short-lived political interests.’
“Some rogue elements who want to use the HANDSHAKE as an excuse to ERODE our hard-earned liberties must NOT take the peaceful coexistence after 2018 for granted! This has to stop!” stated Raila.
ODM candidate Pavel Oimeke won the Bonchari by-elections woth 8,049 votes, and was closely followed by Jubilee candidate John Opore with 7,279 votes. Deputy President William Ruto’s candidate Teresa Bitutu finished third with 6,964 votes having vied on a UDA ticket. The race attracted 12 candidates.
“Congratulations to Bonchari Mp Elect Pavel Oimeke! The win in the just concluded by-election is a clear demonstration of the unwavering support and love for ODM party,” Raila tweeted.
“Governor Ongwae, the Kisii ODM team, the Abagusii community and the entire family of ODM, kazi mzuri!”
Meanwhile, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had to suspend vote tallying in Juja after a chaotic evening at the Mang’u High School tallying center.
