Scores of workers affiliated to two unions at the University of Eldoret held a peaceful protest against embattled Vice chancellor Prof Teresa Akenga.
The staff drawn from University Academic Staff Union and Kenya Universities Staff Union wants Akenga, whose two terms in office has expired to vacate office.
Led by the Uasu chapter chairman Dr Nyaberi Mogaka, the workers complained that the outgoing VC’s stay in office had hampered efforts by the acting Vice chancellor to assume the reign of the university leadership.
“We are giving Prof Akenga 7 days to vacate office to pave way for assumption of office by the new acting VC. Failure to heed to our calls we shall move into action and forcibly eject her from office,” warned Mogaka.
He asked Prof Akenga to proceed on her terminal leave pending the taking over and handing over ceremony instead of reporting to work and yet her two terms in office had come to an end.
“We do not want anything to do with her at the institution since her term in office has expired. It is prudent that she vacates office with immediate effect to pave the way for the new acting vice chancellor to provide leadership into the institution,” added Mogaka.
The university’s Kenya Universities Staff Union chapter Secretary Robinson Kibet has asked the council chair to intervene with the urgency the matter deserves to avoid tension and anxiety at the institution.
“We do not want to reach a situation where the lecturers and non teaching staff will be forced to eject the outgoing VC out of office and that is why we are calling for chancellor’s quick intervention,” said Kibet.
He also asked Prof Akenga to hand over three of the university vehicles she is currently using which he said was against the law having ceased being holder of the position of VC at the institution.
