Teachers in Kenya will henceforth get more maternity and paternity leave days, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced.
The raft of changes were announced by the TSC CEO Mrs. Nancy Macharia.
Macharia said that all female teachers will now have four months maternity leave – while men will have three weeks.
The changes are contained in the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
“The Code of Regulation for teachers (2015) read together with the CBA (2021-2025), have specific provisions for maternity, paternity, and pre-adoptive leave. In line with the said provisions all teachers are eligible for only one leave at a time,” she stated.
Teachers will also have 45 days of pre-adoptive leave – and will be entitled to full salaries from the date of adoption.
“This leave is exclusive of annual leave. The application for leave should be submitted to the DEO/MEO/DCE through the head of institution at least one month before the leave is due and must have supporting medical documents,” read an excerpt from the TSC site.
The changes mean that male teacher who were previously eligible for 10 days within the period of the spouse’s maternity leave, will now get more days to rest.
