Agnes Tirop’s husband and trainer was arrested as he attempted to flee the country days after his wife’s gruesome murder.

Tirop’s husband Ibrahim Rotich, and who is the main suspect in the murder of the young athlete which occurred on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, was arrested by detectives in Changamwe, Mombasa County, on Thursday, October 14.

Rotich is suspected of stabbing his wife Tirop severally after a domestic fight.

The athlete’s body was found lying in a pool of blood inside her bedroom in her Eldoret home – but Rotich could not be traced.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Rotich might have been trying to flee to a neighbouring country. Moments earlier, a car he was driving had rammed a truck as he tried to escape a police roadblock.

“The suspect is currently being grilled by detectives at Changamwe police station, for more details into the murder before being arraigned to answer to murder charges,” reads an excerpt of the DCI statement.

The DCI said: “Rotich is believed to have killed the two-time World Athletics championships bronze medalist by stabbing her before going into hiding.”

According to residents, Tirop and her husband often had domestic wrangles at home – with reports indicating that Tirop had gone to pick her clothes from her house on the night of her murder.

Just recently Tirop returned from an event in Herzogenaurach, Germany where she became the world record holder after winning the 10km road race by clocking 30:01 minutes.

Kenyans and the world has described Tirop as a free spirit –
