A Nairobi court has sentenced Former Sports Cabinet Secretary, Hassan Wario, to six years in jail after he was found guilty of abuse of office.

The sentence was delivered by Milimani High Court Magistrate Elizabeth Juma on Thursday, September 16.

Wario will only escape prison sentence if he pays a Ksh3.6 million fine.

The sentence follows Wario’s conviction over abuse of office in the Rio 2016 Olympics scandal.

The court also fined Stephen Arap Soi  Ksh105 million or a 12 years jail term.

Wario joined President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet in 2013 – and was in charge of sports docket.

Wario is said to have ordered the inclusion of three people in the delegation that went to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He left the Cabinet in 2018 and was appointed Kenya’s ambassador to Austria, only but was dropped in May 2019.

Mr Wario holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of Nairobi and a PhD in social anthropology from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.

He was also the head of ethnography at the National Museums of Kenya back in the 1990s.
