A man charged with murder and sentenced to death has made a unique last wish as he faces the hangman.

Interestingly – the The Supreme Court on Wednesday night granted a last-minute reprieve to the man who wants his pastor physically next to him as he is executed.

The man also wants his preacher to pray loudly for him as he is the executioner takes his life.

The man identified as John Henry Ramirez was to be executed on Wednesday last week – but the process had to be stopped after the Supreme Court intervened and decided to look into his request.

The court will now allow argument in the case to see if his request can be granted – although prison officials have opposed the request terming it strange and against their normal processes.

Strange request

The prisoner can now enjoy an extended life to around October or November when the matter is likely to be interrogated.

The request by Ramirez, 37, has shocked the world.

Ramirez was found guilty of murdering 46-year-old Pablo Castro at a shop by stabbing him 29 times during a robbery. He was arrested 3½ years after the incident.

And now – Ramirez wants his pastor Dana Moore, of the Second Baptist Church to pray for him as he is killed by the State.

The pastor has been visiting the prisoner for the last four years.

Prison officials does not want direct physical contact during lethal injection saying it’s a security risk, adding that praying out loud could disrupt the process.

There are concerns that many death row inmates are asking for their spiritual advisers to be present when they are being executed – but prison officials are keen to discourage it. Meanwhile, the high court in Texas said inmates were free to have spiritual counseling at the time of death.
