Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko on Thursday, June 24, lost a court case he filed at the High Court challenging his impeachment.
The court upheld Sonko’s impeachment by the Senate saying it could not find fault in the decision to impeach Governor Mike Sonko.
Sonko will now have to go back to the drawing board after losing the appeal. Meanwhile, the court upheld the nomination of Anne Kananu as Deputy Governor.
Justice Said Chitembwe, Justices Wilfrida Okwany and Weldon Korir made the determination.
The judges ruled that the nomination, vetting and swearing-in of Anne Kananu as Deputy Governor were done within the law.
“They fully complied with the Constitution. We do not see any external hand in his impeachment,” they ruled.
Sonko had also claimed in his submissions that he had signed the Deed of Transfer that handed over certain County functions to the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) while intoxicated to which the judges said:
“We find that the conduct of Sonko does not meet the highest standard expected of a governor,” Judge Chitembwe ruled.
“The deed of transfer is an important document that cannot be seen to have been dealt with in circumstances where the governor was not sure of,” he said.
“This is in our view the violation of the trust bestowed upon the office of the governor by the electorate as it does not portray good governance, accountability and Integrity,” Chitembwe added.
Sonko will now have to strategize if he is to rescue his political future.
