A train headed for Nairobi from Nanyuki caught fire on June 6, 2021, a few minutes after leaving the station.
The train which transports petroleum products was empty at the time of the accident – and there were no deaths or injuries reported.
Reports indicate that the train had just left Sagana station when it caught fire.
Bellows of smoke could be seen coming from the engine area in a picture that was taken at the scene.
A few people who were in the train jumped to safety and used fire extinguishers to fight the fire.
Sources indicated that the fire was caused by an electric fault – and it took efforts from firefighters from Murang’a station to put out the fire.
Captain Anthony Mwangi, the lead fire fighter in Murang’a said that they received the distress call at 9:30 in the morning and managed to control the fire using the foam extinguisher. They were able to prevent the situation from getting worse.
