[Pictures] Ugandan Minister Loses Daughter in Assassination Attempt

Uganda Transport Minister Edward Katumba Wamala on Tuesday, May 1, survived an assassination attempt in Kampala.

Reports indicate that gunmen sprayed the general in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) vehicle with bullets killing his daughter and driver.

Wamala is currently receiving treatment at a Kampala hospital.

The minister’s daughter Brenda Wamala and driver Haruna Kayondo died in the attack which happened at 9am.

Speaking to press at the Hospital this morning, one of family members, Joyce Ssentongo, a sister in law to Gen Katumba revealed that Mrs Brenda Nantongo had just completed her studies.

“She just finished school recently and had started working. She had just traveled back from the US,” she said.

According to witnesses, four assailants riding on two black motorbikes shot at the minister’s vehicle.

Wamala was an officer in the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) when the National Resistance Army (NRA) defeated the UNLA in 1986.

He was also the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Uganda Police Force (UPF) from 2001 until 2005.
