5 Kenya Navy Soldiers Arrested After Bar Fight

A number of police officers were left nursing serious injuries after they were allegedly assaulted by five Navy officers based in Mtongwe Naval Base in Mombasa.

The five soldiers attached were arrested on Sunday, May 9, for allegedly attacking the police officers who were enforcing curfew rules at night. The police officers were from Inuka Police Station.

The brawl is said to have occurred inside Orion Bar in Vyemani area where the soldiers were bending their elbows together with other patrons at 10pm.

A commotion is said to have ensued after the police officers stormed the bar causing a stampeded. Some of the revellers escaped leaving the soldiers inside bar.

Likoni sub-county police commander Jacktone Opengo said that the five soldiers assaulted the officers on Saturday night, May 8, 2021.

One of the police officers identified as PC Edmond Muoki was left nursing a deep cut to the forehead after he was allegedly hit with a beer bottle on the head.

Sources indicate that Officer Muoki was rushed to Diani Hospital and had to be admitted for specialized treatment.

“The officer is responding well to treatment; he was cut on the head by some of the revellers at the said bar.”

The 10pm incident involved a group of police officers who had been deployed to maintain curfew – and their counterparts who mainly keep watch over the ocean as they protect the country from external attacks.

The matter has since been taken over by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
