Three members of parliament pocket KSh 16 million in travel expenses all within a day according to the Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu.
According to Gathungu, there is massive mileage fraud taking place in parliament with members receiving huge amounts of money daily for their travels upcountry and abroad.
The said MPs received the money for domestic travel, mileage claims and overseas travel funds all withing the same day – and which according to Gathungu were fraudulent.
βIn the circumstances, the propriety of the expenditure of KSh 11.4 million and KSh 5.3 million included under domestic travel and subsistence in the statement of receipts and payments for the year ended June 30, 2020, could not be determined,β she said in a report tabled before parliament as reported by Business Daily.
MPs are entitled by law to receive KSh 18,000 in weekly mileage allowances for a return trip per kilometre depending on the distance travelled.
Lawmakers from Mandera, Lamu, Garissa Wajir, and Turkana are the biggest beneficiaries with more than KSh 1 million claims monthly.
Gathungu said PSC paid out a total of KSh 1.4 billion in the financial year ended June 2020 to MPs for domestic travel.
